1. Introduction
The branch is an independent charity (no. 224337) based in Swansea, South Wales. It is a self-financing organisation committed to providing animal welfare services in its area. The Branch is affiliated to the national RSPCA, but receives no automatic funding from it. This means that the £370,000 annual running costs of the Branch must be entirely met from fundraising activities.

2. History
There has been an animal centre in Swansea since 1935. It was originally situated in Singleton Park  and could accommodate 31 dogs and 18 cats. Over the years, under the leadership of Mr. Bill Deane, it did tremendous work rehoming thousands of animals. Upon the expiry of the lease, a new animal centre was built on the former Llys Nini farm in Penllergaer. Llys Nini opened in April 1997.

3. What does the Branch own and run?
The Branch is primarily based at the Llys Nini Animal Centre in Penllergaer. The centre is purpose built as an animal care facility, and can house up to 57 dogs, 72 cats and many miscellaneous animals at any one time.

The Branch also operates a Clinic in Neath. Open on Wednesday evenings only at present, it provides veterinary care for animals whose owners are on low incomes. See the 'Neath Clinic' page for more information

The Branch operate five shops, one in Neath, Port Talbot, Gorseinon, Porthcawl and Swansea. See the contacts page for details.

The uniformed RSPCA Inspectorate, who undertake the 'face-to-face' work of collecting animals in distress and advising owners on proper care (amongst many other duties), have a local base at Llys Nini. However, their services are provided by the National RSPCA society, not the Branch.

The cost of running Llys Nini and the other Branch activities - maintenance, staffing costs and animal care - is now £370,000 per year. The Branch does not receive any state funding, and no automatic funding from the national RSPCA society. Fundraising is therefore a key part of our role. See the 'How you can help' page for more information.

4. Statistics

2002

1132 animals were accepted into the Animal Centre

3428 separate veterinary treatments were paid for by the Branch for animals in their care

311 animals were neutered whilst staying at Llys Nini, and a further 246 adopters were given vouchers to pay for treatment once the animals were old enough. A total of 552

20-25,000 members of the public visited the Llys Nini Animal Centre

766 home visits to potential adopters of the animals were carried out

868 animals (285 dogs, 395 cats and 188 miscellaneous animals) were rehomed.

The Branch incurred costs of approximately £340,000 to provide these services.

5. How is the Branch run?

The day-to-day running of the Llys Nini Animal Centre is undertaken by Gary Weeks (Manager)

Advice and guidance is available from Lorna Barker, the Branch Development Advisor, who is a national RSPCA employee.

The Branch is an independent charity, and is therefore governed by a committee of Trustees. The trustees are voted or co-opted onto the committee on an annual basis. The chair is Sally Hyman, Secretary: Sandra Beynon and Treasurer: Rose Williams. See the contacts page for information about getting in touch.
