31/07/04: Winkie: the cat with an eye for a lucky break

Winkie, the tabby cat whose eye was saved after a piece of wire was removed

Last week, staff at RSPCA Llys Nini in Swansea were contacted by a Neath vet. Someone had brought them a stray cat with a huge piece of wire sticking out from its face. The RSPCA agreed to pay for the operation to remove the wire and then to make room at their Animal Centre for him.

“We were absolutely amazed when we saw the piece of metal that had been removed from behind his eye. It was about 3 inches long and the type of wire used to make chain-link fences. We can’t understand how he managed to sustain this injury. He was so lucky; he could easily have lost his eye completely!“

Staff have named him “Winkie”, due to the fact that when he was brought in after his operation, one of his eyes was permanently shut due to the swelling.  He is a lovely male cat, very affectionate, and a good looker!"

The local RSPCA Branch is a self-funding charity, Sally Hyman, the volunteer Chair said. “This year’s explosion of the local cat population is putting a real financial strain on us. We are full to capacity, with many cats and kittens temporarily housed with volunteer fosterers.  We could not have found the cash to pay for Winkie’s treatment without the support of the 200 Safe Haven sponsors who regularly commit £1 a week to the Animal Centre.  We are very grateful to them, without their help we would not be able to run the Animal Centre at all!

Anyone wishing to become a member of the scheme can get a leaflet from one of our charity shops, our web site, or by writing to me at Llys Nini Animal Centre, Penllergaer.”

Now that Winkie has made a full recovery, he has his sights set on looking for a good home.
