28/10/06: Parachute jump for the Llys Nini Animal Centre

Laura Simpson and Rachel Thomas

Laura Simpson and Rachel Thomas have high hopes that their parachute jump will raise enough money to make sure that at least some unwanted, abandoned and abused animals will not suffer over Christmas.

Both work at the  Llys Nini Animal Centre in Swansea, which although part of the RSPCA "Family" is not funded by them. All the running costs have to be raised by local people.
Laura says "Christmas is a particularly busy time for us, many people decide that they want a new puppy or kitten for Christmas and just dump the old family pet in order to make room for it. At Christmas, Llys Nini is always full to the rafters and we have a really hard time making sure that we can cope. This year Rachel and I have decided to do a sponsored parachute jump to raise funds to help us look after these unfortunate animals."

Rachel has worked at the Animal Centre for over 2 years, "Unfortunately, in the New Year we have hundreds of people wanting to dump unwanted pets on us. People give pets as presents, not thinking that the cute little animal starts to grow up and needs time and money. These people soon get fed up and decide to throw the unwanted pet away and we have to pick up the pieces. I hope that our parachute jump will go some way to raising some much needed funds and to encourage people not to give pets as presents."

Neither girl has ever done anything like this before and both admit to being a little scared. They hope to make their jump on 5th November but  first they must raise £300 each. Some of this will go towards the cost of the jump, all the remaining money will go towards rescuing the unwanted Christmas animals.

Anyone wishing to help the girls can make a donation directly to RSPCA Llys Nini Animal Centre, Swansea SA4 9WB, or via the website www.llysnini-rspca.org.uk and look for the donate here button.
