26/06/06: Three puppies abandoned on mountainside

Puppy

On Sunday night (25 June), three cold, wet, frightened and very sick puppies were found in a small box abandoned to die on the mountain above Merthyr. Luckily they were found by a walker who struggled to bring them down the mountain and to a local hotel. Later that evening they were picked up and brought to the Llys Nini Animal Centre in Swansea. A spokesperson for the Centre said "the puppies were in a poor condition and it was likely that they would not have survived very long in the cold wet conditions. In fact one of the puppies is about a third of the weight that he should be and we are quite worried about him. All three have been seen by a vet and while the two larger pups are being cared for at the Centre, the third - the smallest is having special 24 hour a day nursing at home with one of the Centre's fosterers."

These weren't the only animals abandoned over the weekend. Staff arrived Saturday morning to find someone had dumped 2 adult cats and an unknown number of kittens by the gates. The rest of the day was spent trying to catch the kittens who had wandered off into the shrubs. A total of 2 adults and 8 kittens have now been caught and Centre staff are hoping that they have managed to find them all. Steve Byrne Animal Centre Manager said " Just dumping animals as if they were just bits of unwanted rubbish is unforgivable. These puppies and kittens have no chance of surviving out in the cold alone. I only hope that there aren't any more puppies or kittens out there.

People should get their pets neutered, but if there are unwanted puppies and kittens take them to an animal welfare organisation. "

Three puppies

Update, 24 July 2006: We are pleased to report that all three puppies are now a picture of health, thanks to the expertise of the Llys Nini Centre staff and specialist foster carers. All have new homes and are looking forward to a happy future with their new families.
