Young Peanut, winner of the regional heat of the Dog of the Year Show, is heading to the RSPCA's Gonsal Farm animal centre for the national final on 11 September.

Up against the winners of ninety-three regional heats , loveable cocker spaniel Peanut had his sight restored thanks to donations from well wishers. He hopes to scoop the coveted title of 'Dog of the Year'.

RSPCA director general Jackie Ballard said: "With more than 20,000 dogs re-homed from RSPCA rescue centres last year, RSPCA Dog of the Year is a great opportunity for dogs who were once unwanted to take centre stage with their new owners and show just what fun and loving pets rescues can make.

"RSPCA Dog of the Year is not a beauty contest.

The finalists have been chosen for their general appearance, personality and relationship with their owner.

The top three lucky mutts will walk away with a variety of prizes provided by the sponsor, Tesco, including doggie toys and snacks plus a commemorative trophy and rosette.

The owner of the overall winning dog will also receive a £100 Tesco voucher."

"He has done really well," said Llys Nini Animal Centre chairwoman Sally Hyman.

"He can see now, which is a huge bonus, and he's getting trained so we have got very high hopes for him."

Visit the Llys Nini website again after 11 September to see how Peanut got on.
