07/06/04: Geese lay golden eggs for the RSPCA

When Peter and Carol Clayton moved into the Pontardawe Inn they found that there was a lone goose living on the river. Carol soon made friends with it but found that it was lonely, so she bought another goose to keep it company. Henry and Gertie got on like a house on fire and all was well until they were attacked by dogs. Henry tried desperately to protect Gertie but ended up clamped in the dog’s jaws. Luckily Carol managed to rescue him literally from the jaws of death but he was very badly injured, they called the RSPCA for help. Henry was first taken to the Llys Nini Animal Centre and then on to the Gower Bird Hospital, where he was nursed back to health.

However, although he seemed better, nobody was quite sure if he could survive back in the “wild”. Keith Hogben, an Animal Collection Officer for the RSPCA brought Henry back home, both he and Carol waded into the river to help Henry get re-acquainted with the water. It was touch and go whether he could still swim, however after a shaky start he was soon able to paddle his way around. Keith had explained to Carol that if Henry hadn’t been able to cope then he could not be returned to the river and would have to live his life in captivity. Both Carol and Keith were so delighted about Henry’s recovery that they stood in the middle of the river with tears running down their cheeks.

Gertie and Henry are still regulars at the Pontardawe Inn, Carol and Peter were so grateful to the local RSPCA that they put a large whisky bottle on the bar to collect funds for the Llys Nini Animal Centre.

The bottle is now full and was presented to the Chair of RSPCA Llys Nini, Sally Hyman, at the pub.

“We are very grateful to Peter and Carol for this gesture, not many people realise that when they call the RSPCA and receive help from us that we have to pick up the costs and that all our funds are raised locally. We were delighted to help Henry and thank all the people from the Pontardawe Inn for their generosity. Peter expects the bottle to contain about £500, which will be a great help to us.”
