01/12/03: No pets as presents this Christmas |
|
|
|
The Llys Nini Animal
Centre will not be rehoming animals during the
period 15 December to 4 January to prevent their
animals being given as presents this
Christmas.
The RSPCA, in line
with all the other major animal welfare
organisations, strongly recommends that Christmas
is not the time to introduce a pet into the family.
Christmas is such a busy and hectic time of the
year that a new pet can easily become afraid by the
noise and bustle. Having a pet is a
commitment of time and money, its first few weeks
in a new home, must be calm and based around a
routine. A new animal, especially a rescued animal
or young puppy or kitten needs to develop a sense
of security in its new surroundings and with its
owners. Consequently, the Animal Centre will not be
rehoming animals over the Christmas period. People
are welcome to visit the Centre to book an animal,
but pets will not released from the Centre from
15th December until 5th
January.

The Branch is encouraging people to think of animals at this time of the year. Its new Christmas Supporters pack comprises a Christmas Puppy Pack or Doggy Bag (a toy puppy in a bag), a supporters certificate and a copy of the Animal Action Magazine. People are able to buy the Christmas Puppy Packs at any of the three RSPCA shops in Swansea, Neath or Port Talbot or directly from the Llys Nini Animal Centre. (Click here to find directions and 'phone numbers.) All the proceeds towards caring for the hundreds of animals at Llys Nini Animal Centre over Christmas. Another animal friendly gift idea is to buy a friend or relative membership of the Safe Haven Scheme, which is a year's sponsorship of a kennel or cat pen. The recipient's name is displayed on the kennel or pen and they also receive a certificate. Click here for more information about Safe Haven. Christmas is a difficult time at the Animal Centre, we usually have number of older dogs and cats dumped on us, as people make room for a new kitten or puppy. Then after Christmas, when people realise that puppies and kitten grow into adults, we have a spate of young animals dumped on us in a post Christmas rush.
The message is clear:
don't give pets as
presents. |
