1. Volunteering
It would be impossible for the Branch to be able to operate as effectively as it does without the dedication of our volunteers. There are many skills that people have which can be immensely useful to the Branch. A regular commitment is always preferred, but there are opportunities that mean that you need not make a diaried slot available every week.

Examples of where you might be able to help include (this list is not exhaustive):

  1. Dog walking
  2. Cat socialising
  3. Undertaking home visits of potential adopters of animals at the Centre
  4. Maintenance / handyperson for projects and the general upkeep of the Branch premises
  5. Collecting and writing material (including photographs) for this website

If you would like more information or would like to discuss how you could become involved, please contact the staff of the Animal Centre. Tel: 01792 229435, Fax: 01792 229434 or email: volunteering@llysnini-rspca.org.uk.

2. Fundraising
The Branch costs approximately £500,000 per year to run. With no statutory funding coming to us, the fundraising work is an essential part of what we do.

There are many established ways in which we collect funds. Regular collections at Tesco's and public events at the Llys Nini Animal Centre have proved successful. We have a number of local companies and public sector organisations who collect used printer cartridges and mobile 'phones and have them recycled with all profits being passed to the Branch. (See section 6 below for more on this.)

We are always looking for new and innovative ways to raise money. The short and medium term viability of the Branch relies on it. With this said, all ideas and offers of help are gratefully received. Please contact the staff of the Animal Centre (see paragraph 1 above) to discuss how you can be involved.

3. Rehoming an animal
The Llys Nini Animal Centre can house up to 57 dogs, 72 cats and many miscellaneous animals at any one time. This means that many visitors are able to find an animal ideally suited to them and their circumstances with ease. There is a regular turnover of animals as they are rehomed so you should be prepared to regularly visit in order to see the new entrants. Please note that due to the resources required, it is impossible for the Animal Centre staff to maintain a mailing or other list of visitor's preferred breed of animal and to contact you when one comes in.

The rehoming process is straightforward, and involves a number of steps in order to ensure that the right animal goes to the right home. After shortlisting an animal during the visit, the Animal Centre staff are able to give you some more information about their background, temperament and characteristics. If you wish to proceed, a home visit is arranged. This informal visit is undertaken by a volunteer or member of staff who will check to see that you can make the right home environment available, e.g. a secure garden in a home away from busy roads for a dog. Once a successful home visit is completed and written up, you will be invited up to the Centre to pay a modest rehoming fee and collect your chosen animal.

Visit the online rehoming gallery for some of the long stay animals currently at the centre.

Further enquiries about the rehoming process should be addressed to the staff at the Llys Nini Centre. Tel: 01792 229435, Fax: 01792 229434 or email info@llysnini-rspca.org.uk

4. Becoming a committee member

As a registered charity, the Branch is governed by a committee of Trustees. Trustees are either voted in at the annual Annual General Meeting (AGM) or are co-opted during the year. Trustees are expected to join the National Society in order to gain full voting rights. The National Society membership pages have more information.

Meetings are held once a month and Trustees are urged to attend as many as possible. Emails and circulars are sent as appropriate to manage matters that cannot wait until the next meeting. It is difficult to quantify the commitment in terms of time, but a few hours a week would be the maximum that anybody could reasonably expect.

The Trustees have the opportunity to influence the running of the Branch, and to shape the future direction through policy development, running projects and generally looking forward. We are always looking for innovative individuals who are prepared to make a commitment to local animal welfare.

For more information, please contact the Branch Chair, Sally Hyman. Email sally@llysnini-rspca.org.uk or leave a message at Llys Nini (tel: 01792 229435 or fax 01792 229434). Please note that Sally does not work at the Animal Centre and therefore messages left at Llys Nini will take a short while to reach her.

5. Making a financial donation

We welcome financial donations from individuals, companies, organisations and from fundraising events.

One-off donations can be made by cash, cheque or credit/debit card. Please do not send cash through the post, or email credit card details as neither is secure. Cash donations can be made at the Llys Nini Animal Centre. Otherwise, please send a cheque or note of your credit/debit card details to Llys Nini Animal Centre, Penllergaer, Swansea SA4 9WB. Credit/debit card donations can also be telephoned through to 01792 229434 24 hours a day.

Regular contributions are now administered through a scheme called 'Safe Haven'. This gives donors the opportunity to sponsor a single or number of animal pens by making a monthly donation. More information is available.

If you would like to undertake a fundraising event, we would welcome the chance to try and publicise your event and give you recognition for your efforts. Please contact the staff of the Llys Nini Animal Centre on tel: 01792 229434, fax: 01792 229434 or email: info@llysnini-rspca.org.uk who will be able to help.

If your company or organisation is interested in sponsoring the Branch, please contact the Branch Chair, Sally Hyman, in the first instance. Email sally@llysnini-rspca.org.uk or leave a message at Llys Nini (tel: 01792 229435 or fax 01792 229434). Please note that Sally does not work at the Animal Centre and therefore messages left at Llys Nini will take a short while to reach her.

6. Donating used printer cartridges, mobile 'phones and foreign currency you no longer need
The Branch has made arrangements with a recycling company to process all used toner and inkjet printer cartridges, plus mobile 'phones and then make a donation to the branch.

Local companies and organisations who use lots of these products can arrange for collections to take place directly from their place of work (minimum of 15 toner cartridges per collection) and for donations to be made to the Branch. Contact the staff of the Animal Centre on tel: 01792 229435, fax: 01792 229434 or email: info@llysnini-rspca.org.uk for more information. We would like to thank the University of Wales Swansea (and particularly the staff of the Disability Office for coordinating the collections) for raising over £1,000 in this way.

Unwanted foreign currency, including both coins and notes, are exchanged for sterling that we can then use.

Individuals can leave their cartridges, 'phones and foreign currency at Llys Nini where periodic collections are made.

7. Safe Haven scheme

RSPCA Safe Haven logo

The Safe Haven scheme was launched on 14 October 2003. The scheme offers well-wishers the opportunity to give a regular amount every month to sponsor a cat or dog pen at the Llys Nini Animal Centre.

Llys Nini Animal Centre rescues over 1,000 animals each year. The animals come into the Centre from all over South, Central and West Wales. Llys Nini is their Safe Haven, where they receive first class care and attention before they are rehomed.

This costs the Branch over £500,000 each year. We rely entirely on donations from the people of South Wales; we receive no state aid, lottery grants or financial help from the National RSPCA.

We now need help - your help - to maintain this level of animal welfare. We need 5,000 people to join our new Safe Haven scheme. Could you spare £1 a week to sponsor an animal pen and help to rescue an abused or neglected animal?

To help save an animal, please print the application form/leaflet by clicking this link, call the staff of the Animal Centre on 01792 229435, email info@llysnini-rspca.org.uk for more information or apply via our eBay shop. If you can display one of our posters where others might see it, you can print a colour one, or contact the Centre and request one be sent to you. Thank you.

If you don't help them, who will?

Note that the application form/leaflet and poster are in Adobe Acrobat format. You can download the free Acrobat Reader software to read the files, if it is not already installed on your computer.

You can see a list of safe haven donors online. Many thanks from all at the Branch for your commitment.

8. Donating to and/or buying from our shops

The branch operates six shops - one in Swansea, Neath, Port-Talbot, Porthcawl, Llanelli and Gorseinon. Visit the contacts page for addresses and telephone numbers.

The shops are well-stocked with a variety of quality products, professionally prepared for sale. Clothes, bric-a-brac and RSPCA merchandising are the most common items.

Donations are welcomed both at the shops and at our Llys Nini Animal Centre.

9. Leaving a donation to the Branch in your will

The Branch is extremely grateful for the legacies left by kind supporters in their wills. It is vitally important that if you wish to leave money in this way, that you quote the amount for the benefit of 'Llys Nini Branch of the RSPCA, Llys Nini Animal Centre, Penllergaer, Swansea SA4 9WB. Charity Number 224337'. The charity number is essential. It is often difficult, expensive and unpleasant to contest wills which are simply made to the 'RSPCA' rather than to the Llys Nini Branch, where we are aware that the intention was for the Branch to receive funds but the money is destined for the National Society.

John Collins and Partners Solicitors offer a 20% discount to supporters of the Branch. The voucher below can be used to claim such a discount. Visit their website or call the Wills and Probate department on 0800 652 7737 to discuss the matter further.

10. Payroll Giving

The Llys Nini Branch can accept direct donations made via employee payroll. This has tax advantages - every £1.00 donated will only cost the employee 76p. The Government may also match your donations for the first six months.

For more information, please contact the Llys Nini Administration Office. 01792 229434 or admin@llysnini-rspca.org.uk Our payroll giving leaflet is also available.
